‘Moyes to be delighted’ as Everton handed boost after Leeds development

Everton are set to face Leeds United in their opening game of the Premier League season, and there is now good news for the Toffees.

David Moyes is hoping for a few more signings to come through the door before the season starts in August, but there is optimism for the upcoming campaign.

Everton will start with an away trip to Elland Road before making their bow at the Hill Dickinson Stadium against Brighton.

They will hope to kick off life at their new stadium on the back of an away victory, and Everton will now fancy their chances more as Leeds have been handed a blow.

Jaka Bijol suspended for Leeds v Everton

Leeds have pulled off a strong signing in Udinese captain Jaka Bijol, but he will not be available for their first Premier League game.

The centre-back is expected to strengthen Leeds’ defence, as an experienced leader coming in from Serie A, but Everton will not have to face him.

Everton’s first match will be against Leeds

As reported by Leeds journalist Graham Smyth (17 July), Bijol was sent off in his final Serie A game, and a one-match suspension has now been carried over to the Premier League.

Bijol received two yellow cards in 39 minutes on the final day against Fiorentina, as his side fell to a 3-2 defeat, and he will now face more consequences as his Leeds debut will be delayed.

Everton need a strong start next season

While facing the Championship winners away is a tough start for Moyes’ side, these are the kinds of games in which picking up points and delivering strong performances will be crucial.

Everton need a strong start if they are to progress this season, rather than playing catch-up after falling behind yet again, and victory over Leeds would be the best way to start.

The trip to Leeds will likely see Thierno Barry make his debut upfront, and his life will be made easier now that Bijol will not be there facing him.

Fellow new signing Sebastiaan Bornauw is likely to start in Bijol’s place, but Leeds will definitely be weaker without the Slovenian.
