Everton fans ‘will be stunned’ as Asmir Begovic closes in on new transfer

Everton have been slowly plugging the gaps in their squad after a host of players departed at the end of June.

Thierno Barry has been the standout signing for David Moyes, having sealed a £27million move from Villarreal.

The Toffees have also strengthened their goalkeeping department by acquiring Mark Travers from Bournemouth for £4million.

Now, Asmir Begovic, who departed the Merseyside club on June 30, is closing in on a surprise next move.

Begovic closes in on new deal after Everton exit

Begovic was always going to be behind Jordan Pickford at Everton, but he clearly admired the England international.

The 38-year-old has been a free agent since leaving the Toffees, where he made just 10 appearances during a four-year stint.

Begovic has played for a host of English clubs, including Chelsea, Stoke City, and Portsmouth, and is primed for a new challenge.

Now, Leicester City are in talks with the goalkeeper, with contract terms being discussed, according to Fabrizio Romano (19 July).

The Foxes suffered instant relegation last season and are building a new squad under departed QPR boss Marti Cifuentes.

Indeed, Cifuentes managed Begovic when the Bosnian spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Loftus Road, where he made 46 appearances.

Now, the pair are set for a reunion, despite it previously being “100 per cent” certain that he would return to his homeland with Sarajevo.

Toffees right to replace Begovic with Travers

While Travers is unlikely to feature much next season, it was a smart move to bring him in in place of Begovic.

The 26-year-old performed admirably for Bournemouth when called upon and did a respectable job during his six-month loan spell with Middlesbrough.

Of course, his time will likely come if Pickford gets injured or suspended, and the Irishman must be ready.

Moreover, his opportunities will probably come in the domestic cup competitions, which Everton should target.

As for Begovic, he has been there to cover when needed and could be set for a number one role in the East Midlands.

Indeed, it is a stunning move for the 38-year-old, who cannot have long left in his career.
