Everton ready to strike defender loan agreement with St Mirren

Everton are under pressure to accelerate their transfer window in the coming weeks.

The Toffees have experienced a tough start to pre-season, first drawing to Accrington Stanley, before suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Blackburn on Saturday (19 July).

David Moyes’ options have been marginally improved by the arrivals of Thierno Barry and Mark Travers so far, but the Scot needs further signings.

Everton lost several players at the end of the season, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Ashley Young all departing following the end of their contracts.

St Mirren keen on Campbell

Everton are lacking in depth across the pitch, with just three senior centre-backs and five midfielders – one of whom is 18-year-old Harrison Armstrong, who spent last season on loan at Derby County.

But fans have been disgruntled by the seeming lack of urgency at The Hill Dickinson Stadium, with pre-season already underway and the Premier League opener rapidly approaching.

Yet Everton are close to allowing one of their options leave the club, according to Alan Nixon.

The journalist reported via his Patreon (July 20), that the Toffees are ready to send Elijah Campbell back out on loan, and the defender could join Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

Campbell became a regular for Ross County

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Ross County, making 31 appearances for the Staggies as they were relegated to the Scottish Championship.

Campbell is viewed as a talent at Everton, having been capped eight times by England’s Under-20 side.

But Moyes clearly does not feel the Manchester-born centre-half is ready to make an impact in the Premier League, despite the Scot’s severe lack of options in defence.

Everton situation could get ugly

When the Friedkin Group completed their takeover of Everton last year, fans hoped their recent history of flirting with the relegation zone would be a thing of the past.

But the Toffees are running the risk of finding themselves in the same position, should they not act quickly in the coming weeks.

More than anything, depth is required to keep up with the relentless nature of the Premier League, and currently, depth is exactly what Moyes and Everton lack.
