Moyes goes back to drawing board amid worrying Branthwaite news at Everton

Jarrad Branthwaite has developed into one of Everton’s best players.

The young centre-back has now cemented his spot in the starting XI after making his move from Carlisle United in 2020.

Therefore, David Moyes would have been relieved when Branthwaite signed a new contract at Everton this summer, ending speculation that he could leave as a free agent.

However, Moyes may still have to target a centre-back this summer despite the defender’s future being secure.

Branthwaite picks up another knock in pre-season

One of the biggest issues with Branthwaite is his injury record.

Last season alone, the defender missed 14 matches as he struggled with issues with his groin.

Now, injuries have struck again, with The Bobble confirming via X (23 July) that Branthwaite had not travelled with the rest of the Everton squad on Wednesday to the USA as a precaution due to a minor injury.

This is no doubt a massive warning to Moyes, with James Tarkowski still recovering from his injury.

Reports from last week stated that Moyes was not targeting a centre-back this summer.

However, given Branthwaite’s awful injury record, the Scotsman may have to reconsider this strategy.

A new left-sided defender is needed, and could provide excellent cover for Branthwaite if he does get injured during the competitive season.

Moyes needs to focus on quality in depth

While numerous positions do need strengthening, quality in depth is also vital at Everton if they are to progress up the table.

Therefore, Moyes must also look to bring in back-up options this summer, as well as signings that will strengthen the first team.

This could also allow Everton to go further in the cup competitions and finally end their trophy drought that dates back to their 1995 FA Cup victory.

Hopefully, Moyes will consider looking at possible signings from the Championship and abroad to help fill this quota ahead of the new campaign.
