Moyes won’t be happy with what Everton-linked Vagiannidis did in Champions League

Georgios Vagiannidis has been heavily linked to Everton throughout the transfer window.

David Moyes has been chasing a right-back throughout the summer, a position they are in desperate need of reinforcing.

Kenny Tete had already rejected Everton in favour of staying at Fulham, which was no doubt a blow for the Scotsman.

Therefore, Everton have now eyed up a move for Vagiannidis, who plays for Panathinaikos.

However, Moyes has now been given a massive warning after Vagiannidis’ awful display against Rangers on Tuesday.

Georgios Vagiannidis sent off vs Rangers

Panathinaikos took part in their Champions League qualifiers against Rangers on Tuesday night.

It was no doubt a big match for the Greek side, with millions on the line for qualification.

As a result, despite Everton’s interest in Vagiannidis, Panathinaikos were keen to keep hold of the full-back for the tie.

Yet, this now appears to be to their detriment, with the 23-year-old being sent off for two bookable offences just before the hour mark which played a big part in their 2-0 defeat at Ibrox.

While the second yellow was a tad soft, the first was stupid, with the defender diving in the first half.

This is no doubt a massive warning for Everton, with it clear that Vagiannidis cannot perform well on the big stage.

In a critical game, the right-back has cost the Greek club massively, and they are now in real danger of being knocked out of the competition early on.

Everton should look to sign a proven right-back

If Everton want to sign a new right-back, then Moyes has to look inside Europe’s top five leagues.

Bringing in someone who has impressed in Greece is a massive risk, and that was on full show on Tuesday.

Everton’s goal has to be to return to Europe, and they are not going to do that by trying to take shortcuts with cheap buys.

Hopefully, Moyes will now target a proven right-back who has the experience to instantly slide into the Toffees’ starting XI.
