Everton sent thank you as midfielder waves goodbye with transfer confirmed

Everton have seen a fair share of departures this summer.

The likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Ashley Young left at the end of their contracts as the shakeup of the squad began.

David Moyes has overseen a huge revamp, with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Thierno Barry, and Mark Travers brought in, to shore up the team.

However, departures are also still being sanctioned, and the latest one may be a shock for Toffees supporters.

Metcalfe sends message as Everton exit confirmed

Jenson Metcalfe was a highly rated product of the Blues academy, but he will not be a part of the future under Moyes.

The midfielder has joined League One outfit Bradford City for an undisclosed fee after being with the Toffees since the age of five.

He took to Instagram (24 July) to confirm his departure and send a short message to his boyhood club, saying: “Everton, thank you.”

Everton must turn to youth in the future

It is a shame to see the 20-year-old leave without having a chance to earn a place in the senior set-up.

Metcalfe never made a single appearance for the first team despite being with the Hill Dickinson Stadium outfit for 15 years.

His last appearance was in the 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Blackburn Rovers, where he made an 11-minute cameo.

The Blues must turn to their academy in the future, as it will save the Friedkin Group a fortune in the transfer market.

They have neglected their youth setup in recent years, with only Jarrad Branthwaite making the step up successfully and remaining in the squad, and even he was signed from Carlisle first.

Anthony Gordon is another example, but he was sold to Newcastle for £45million to try and help with Profit and Sustainability issues and has since gone on to star for the St James’ Park outfit.

Harrison Armstrong looks ready to make the step up in the future, but he may be sent out on loan by Moyes to gain senior experience again, and may have to wait to make his impact.

The new ownership needs to focus on the academy, as well as transfers, if the Blues are to reach their potential.
