Everton have ‘serious’ Branthwaite concern as injury verdict emerges – Exclusive

This article includes exclusive comment from former Everton scout Bryan King.

Jarrad Branthwaite’s future has been a major talking point at Everton so far this summer.

The centre back had been attracting interest from some of the country’s biggest clubs once again, before he then committed his future to the Toffees by signing a new long-term deal.

Branthwaite’s decision to ink a new contract at Everton has been one of the highlights of their transfer window as of yet, as it has tied down the man who is arguably their hottest property at the moment.

David Moyes will know that the 23-year-old will be integral to his side’s fortunes next term, so the latest news surrounding Branthwaite will not be welcome for the boss.

Branthwaite’s injury may be more serious than first feared

Everton’s summer preparations have now been complicated by Branthwaite picking up an injury ahead of their tour to the USA.

The Toffees are set to play in the Premier League’s Summer Series during their time stateside, but their star man hasn’t made the trip with the rest of the first team squad.

The England international’s injury has been described as a minor issue by the Merseysiders, and he will remain at Finch Farm for the next few weeks as he builds up his fitness.

However, ex-Goodison scout Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Goodison News – believes that Branthwaite’s injury could be cause for concern, and is perhaps more serious than the club have shared at present.

“I wonder if the injury is perhaps more serious than we think,” King said.

“Because normally, they would probably have taken him (to the USA) for the squad building.

“If it’s a minor setback, is it a minor setback to an old injury? Or is it a more serious injury than a minor setback?

“I’ve known players before who’ve picked up little knocks and still travelled with the squad. You’re going to have all your physios there on the pre-season tour anyway.

“That way he could’ve been part of the squad and part of the bonding. So, I wonder whether it could be a more serious injury than what it’s being made out to be.”

Everton need Branthwaite fit to start v Leeds on 18 August

Moyes will be desperate to have Branthwaite ready for the opening day of the Premier League season, as his importance to Everton cannot be understated.

Their backline is a completely different proposition when the former PSV loanee is part of it, and his involvement will be crucial to how the Toffees begin the campaign.

Everton’s opening five Premier League fixtures.

With him, they have the potential to hit the ground running in the Hill Dickinson Stadium and quickly progress up the table.

However, if they are forced to play the first few games without him, it could easily result in a scenario similar to that which West Ham experienced, where a team can struggle to adapt to life in a new stadium.

It’s a big summer for Everton on and off the pitch, and Branthwaite’s availability could have a huge say on how they open the new season.
