Vagiannidis agrees personal terms for new transfer after Everton news

Everton are aiming to sign a long-term option at right-back, and have identified Georgios Vagiannidis as a target.

Vagiannidis has excelled for Greek giants Panathinaikos and attracted transfer interest from a number of clubs as a result.

Everton extended the contract of Seamus Coleman, but are on the hunt for a natural right-back who can make himself a starter.

However, Vagiannidis will not be that signing, and David Moyes will need to look elsewhere as a deal has been agreed.

Vagiannidis closing in on Sporting Lisbon move

Vagiannidis will no longer move to the Premier League with Everton, as Portuguese giants Sporting Club De Portugal have agreed a deal to sign him.

That’s according to Portuguese journalist Sebastiao Sousa-Pinto, who has reported via X (26 July) that the right-back has agreed a five-year contract at Sporting.

A £12.2million fee is close to being agreed between the clubs, and Vagiannidis will now move to Liga NOS, where he will compete for a starting role with Ivan Fresneda.

This now means that Everton will have to look elsewhere for a new right-back, but there has been encouraging progress in the transfer window.

Everton aim for a young full-back pairing

Everton parted ways with Ashley Young at the end of last season and will now aim to take their back line in a different direction.

With Coleman, Young and James Tarkowski, Everton had one of the oldest back lines in the Premier League last season, and are now aiming to modernise the position.

Teenager Adam Aznou is set to join from Bayern Munich, and with Vagiannidis just 23, it is clear that both full-backs Everton want to sign are in a similar age bracket.

The Friedkin Group clearly have the long-term and resale value in mind when it comes to these targets, and the arrival of Aznou should hopefully spark more action in a busy transfer window for the Toffees.

At least one more defender, another midfielder and two wingers are needed at the bare minimum for Everton, given how many players they let leave at the end of last season, and time is running out to sign and integrate them all into the team before the Premier League restarts.
