Ashley Young reveals Everton disappointment ahead of Ipswich debut
Ashley Young joined Ipswich Town after leaving Everton.
Merseyside has witnessed plenty of change so far this summer, and mainly for the better as The Friedkin Group look to stamp their authority on the Toffees.
However, the changes made came at a cost for several players who were forced to move on after the expiration of their contracts with Everton.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was one of those who departed, as was Young, with the latter speaking openly about his exit before Ipswich’s campaign gets underway in just over a week.

Young wanted a new deal with Everton
Everton signed Young back in 2023 after his exit from Aston Villa, with the defender penning a two-year deal with the Toffees, which of course ran until this summer.
However, TFG opted against offering the 40-year-old a new deal, and Young has since spoken out about the disappointment that came from that.
Club | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Watford | 110 | 22 | 9 |
Aston Villa | 247 | 38 | 53 |
Man United | 261 | 19 | 33 |
Inter Milan | 59 | 5 | 9 |
Everton | 70 | 2 | 4 |
Via Sky Sports News (28 July), Young said: “It was difficult. I was disappointed not to be offered a new contract [at Everton], but that’s behind me now, and I’ve got to come here now and produce the goods on the pitch.”
Young is likely to make his debut for Ipswich when they travel to face newly promoted Birmingham City in the Championship on Friday, 8 August.
Everton made the right choice with Young exit
Young was a credit to the Toffees for the two years he was here, but there comes a time when both parties should move on.
With Everton looking towards a brighter and brighter future, that time was this summer, and the fact that he has had to drop down to the Championship shows that it was probably the right decision from the Toffees.
As for his replacement, Everton are looking to conclude a deal to sign Adam Aznou, with plenty of other targets still being worked on ahead of the new Premier League season, with lots to be getting excited about.
