Jordan Pickford reacts as goalkeeper finds new club after Everton exit

Everton had set their goalkeeping situation as one of their main priorities to address in the transfer window this summer.

The Toffees needed an overhaul throughout their entire shot-stopping department, and David Moyes will surely be delighted with the work that has been done so far.

Everton have already bolstered their ranks with the arrival of Mark Travers from Bournemouth, and the Irishman should be a perfect option to provide capable cover for Jordan Pickford.

The England star is one of the Premier League’s best glovemen, and he will undoubtedly be keeping the number one shirt for the 2025/26 campaign.

Pickford and Tarkowski react as Begovic joins Leicester

Everton’s goalkeeping situation had taken priority as a result of the departures of Asmir Begovic and Joao Virginia.

The experienced pair had both acted as understudies for Pickford over the last few campaigns, but were allowed to leave by the Toffees earlier in the summer upon the expiry of their contracts.

Virginia has already found his next club, with a move to Sporting CP confirmed a few days ago. Now it is Begovic’s turn to pen a new deal.

The 38-year-old has now agreed to join Championship side Leicester City, as the East Midlands outfit bid for an immediate return to the top flight.

The Foxes are facing heavy interest in their own ‘keeper, Mads Hermansen, which could see the former Everton man potentially in line for plenty of minutes if the Dane does depart.

Begovic issued a message via his Instagram account (29 July) after agreeing to join Leicester, and his post was liked by several Everton players.

Both Pickford and James Tarkowski were among those to like the post, effectively offering their seal of approval to the move.

Everton will be pleased with goalkeeping outcome

Pickford will still shoulder the majority of the goalkeeping burden for Everton, unless he suffers a serious injury, but they must still be pleased with the way they have addressed the issue this summer.

Travers is more than capable of stepping in if needed, and should provide high-quality cover for the domestic cup competitions.

Begovic has been a good ‘keeper over the years, but at 38, he is now surely beginning to wind down his career, and with that in mind, Travers is certainly an upgrade.

Virginia hardly played for the Toffees after joining from Arsenal in 2018, so his departure should also be seen as a good decision.

Moyes will obviously hope that the cover isn’t necessarily, but he must be satisfied with the options that he now has below his first choice.
