David Moyes names Everton player he’s been disappointed with in pre-season

David Moyes hasn’t been shy about expressing his disappointment with Everton’s summer business.

Moyes recently admitted he’s “desperate” for new signings as he continued to miss out on his transfer targets.

Now, he’s named a player whose performance has been far from impressive during Everton’s pre-season friendlies.

Moyes not pleased with Beto displays

Everton finished bottom of the Premier League’s ‘Summer Series’ table after three friendly games in the United States.

They were beaten by West Ham and Bournemouth in this round-robin tournament, although they earned a respectable 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday.

Speaking before this match, Moyes singled out Beto as someone he’d like to see up his game.

As reported by Metro, he said: “I’ve been a bit disappointed with Beto and I’ve told him. We’re needing a bit more and he can do more and he has done more.”

Moyes added that he had also been disappointed with Garner, although he felt his performances had improved throughout the summer, and he went on to produce a fine display against United.

Both Garner and Beto started the 2-2 draw with Manchester United, in which Everton came from behind twice to seal their only point of the tournament. After the game, Moyes said that Garner was probably the best player.

Iliman Ndiaye scored in the first half, while an Ayden Heaven own goal rounded off the scoring.

Everton will need more signings to stand chance of improving on last season

Everton’s pre-season performances haven’t been great, although Moyes can point to the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski missing out on games due to injury.

Even so, he will remain desperate to sign a few extra players before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Everton only scored 42 goals in 38 Premier League games last season. Despite signing Thierno Barry from Villarreal, they still look short of meaningful attacking threats.

It’s hard to see how they’ll improve on this tally, considering:

The Toffees have been linked with a move for Brazilian winger Douglas Luiz, but they’ll likely need two or three players of his calibre to stand a chance of competing for a European place or domestic honours next season.

Everton kick off their Premier League campaign against Leeds on 18 August.
