Why do Everton play in royal blue home kits?

Everton have a long a proud history as one of the major clubs in England.

The Toffees have consistently been near the top end of the footballing pyramid, and have not been outside of the top flight since 1954.

Recently, there have been plenty of changes at the Merseyside club, with Everton moving into the Hill Dickinson Stadium at the start of the campaign.

However, despite this, much has stayed the same, with the Toffees continuing to don their famous Royal Blue kits.

Everton didn’t always have royal blue kits

Kits have also been important to football fans, and this is no different at the Toffees.

Many of Everton’s away kits over the years have been stunning, with the 1985/86 shirt being a particular highlight.

However, while the home kit is traditionally meant to stay similar in terms of colours, this hasn’t always been the case for the Merseyside club.

In their early years, Everton had many different styles for their home kit. Their first featured a blue and white striped shirt with white shorts and black socks.

From here, a black shirt with a red slash was used, while salmon and red coloured jerseys were also prominent.

It wasn’t until 1892 that blue was used. However, the kit was similar to that of Manchester City, in a sky-blue style.

Royal blue was used for the first time in the 1901/02 campaign, becoming the official colour of the kits.

Everton did revert to a sky blue colour in 1906, but protests from fans saw the Toffees quickly revert back to their royal blue kit.

Since then, barring a few exceptions, Everton have maintained their royal blue jerseys.

David Moyes has a chance to make Everton a success again

Despite the proud history of the Toffees, it is no secret that Everton have fallen off in recent years.

The Merseyside club have not won a major trophy since 1995, with this wait being far too long for a club of Everton’s size.

Therefore, David Moyes has a chance to start a new era at the Toffees, and finally end this drought.

While many do not believe Moyes is capable of winning a trophy at Everton, his early-season form shows that the Scotsman can still get the best out of his squad.
