Everton blindsided Freiburg for Merlin Rohl transfer as new admission made
Everton left Freiburg reeling when they signed Merlin Rohl on deadline day.
Everton signed Rohl on an initial loan deal from the Bundesliga club, which has a £17.3million obligation to buy next summer.
Rohl should add crucial depth to the Toffees’ midfield, and that move allowed Harrison Armstrong to leave Everton on loan to get more experience.
Both those transfers should benefit David Moyes‘ side in the future, but the German outfit’s feelings on the deal have now been revealed.
Freiburg boss makes new Everton and Merlin Rohl admission
Rohl came to Everton in a deadline-day deal, with the Blues wanting extra bodies in the engine room ahead of a pivotal season.
Freiburg boss Julian Schuster has made a new admission about the unexpected loss of the Germany Under-21 international, which left his side blindsided as they were planning for the season with him.
Speaking to Kicker on 7 September, he said: “I didn’t foresee anything, [the move] came about at very short notice.
“On the one hand, we would have liked to keep Merlin, I think it was clearly stated that an offer of a certain size could be an argument for letting the boys go.”
Everton appeal is clear under David Moyes
In years gone by, Everton may have had difficulties bringing such a highly-rated player from his home country to Merseyside.
However, Moyes has brought the feel-good factor back to Blues, and made them a place where players want to come and play.

That is evidenced by the fact that Jack Grealish and Tyler Dibling were willing to come to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, when they had other offers on the table.
If Moyes continues to revolutionise Everton and reinvigorate their performances on the pitch, it should allow them to open up doors for huge future transfers.
It is an exciting time to support the Blues, and it may only get better, if they can keep up the progression.
The capture of Rohl could prove to be a coup for the Merseysiders, if he fulfils his potential and the fact that the Germans did not want to lose him, shows how highly that they thought of him.
