Everton must overcome 10-year horror streak vs Aston Villa

Everton will return to Premier League action against Aston Villa on Saturday but must defeat some demons if they are to emerge victorious.

It has been a strong start to the season, with Everton’s 3-2 win at Wolves marking three consecutive victories across all competitions.

The Toffees had kicked off the season with a 1-0 loss to Leeds United at Elland Road, but wins over Brighton and Mansfield Town quickly worked to settle David Moyes’ team.

Jack Grealish has been the standout from nine Everton summer signings, with the winger enjoying a huge impact at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

And fellow arrival Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has also been in terrific form, with the two forming a dangerous trio with Iliman Ndiaye.

Everton have not beaten Aston Villa at home since 2015

Villa are expected to miss ex-Everton man Amadou Onana for Saturday’s clash, with question marks remaining over several other players’ involvement.

But the visitors will have some history on their side at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton have not beaten Villa at home in any competition since November 2015, when braces from Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley gave the home side the three points against a Remi Garde-led side that would go on to finish at the foot of the Premier League table.

Circumstances surrounding each club have changed dramatically since that date, and the head-to-head results have followed suit.

In fact, Everton have won just once against Villa in the last 13 meetings between the sides – a 2-1 win for the Toffees at Villa Park in the Carabao Cup in 2023.

The last Premier League win over Villa for Everton came in the same season as the last home win, with Roberto Martinez’s side winning 3-1 in the March 2016 return fixture.

Early season Villa form provides perfect chance for Everton

Villa have become somewhat of a bogey team for Everton in the last decade, but this season, the pendulum looks to have finally swung back in the Toffees’ favour.

Unai Emery’s side have endured an appalling start to the season, drawing to Newcastle United on the opening day before losses to Brentford and Crystal Palace.

The Spaniard is looking for a confidence-boosting performance, but Moyes will hope that does not come against his side on Saturday.

Everton, alternatively, will have the chance to make it three consecutive Premier League wins for only the second time since March 2021.
