David Moyes given painful Everton reminder during live Tottenham vs Villarreal coverage

David Moyes is looking to take Everton back into Europe.

Everton have started their Premier League season brilliantly, as they are unbeaten in their last three matches after the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa.

Everton fans are dreaming after Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall brought the feel-good factor to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

However, they have been served with a reminder of one of the most dismal times in Moyes‘ managerial career.

Everton mentioned in Tottenham vs Champions League clash

Everton have not been in the Champions League for 20 years, and they suffered a disappointing exit to Villarreal in the 2005/06 qualifying phase.

The Blues were eliminated after a 2-1 defeat at Goodison Park, despite the fact that they won the away leg 1-0.

Ahead of the clash between Spurs and the Spanish side, commentator Jon Champion gave Moyes a painful reminder of the dismal night.

Speaking on Amazon Prime (19:58pm), he said: “Twenty European matches here without defeat for Spurs, 20 years since Villarreal’s only win in England at Everton.”

David Moyes will still be scarred by the Villarreal result

It felt like Moyes’ Blues side were destined to get into Europe’s elite competition after they had finished above winners Liverpool in the 2004/05 season.

However, they were stopped from entering the group stages after the loss to the La Liga side, but it was under controversial circumstances.

While the Toffees had been fairly beaten in the first-leg despite creating lots of chances, the second leg is seen as a farce by many supporters and observers.

Legendary referee Pierluigi Collina ruled out a Duncan Ferguson goal that would have sent Moyes’ side through, and they were resigned to the UEFA Cup instead of the tie potentially going to extra time.

Many Everton supporters still hold it against the Italian to this day, and the Yellow Submarine went on to score again, but they may not have if the momentum had not drained away from the Blues.
