How much Everton could actually be forced to pay Burnley amid new legal battle
Everton are locked in a legal fight with Burnley that could have huge ramifications.
Everton were docked points by the Premier League on two separate occasions for breaching Profit and Sustainability Regulations.
However, those deductions did not come in the same season as the breaches, and the Turf Moor outfit are claiming that they should have been as Everton may have been relegated instead of them.
The hearing is set to begin later this week, with the potential for huge ramifications for David Moyes‘ side.

Everton could pay Burnley up to £10m
Burnley are suing Everton for a total of £50million, claiming that they gained a sporting advantage by breaching PSR rules.
Finance expert Stefan Borson believes that the Toffees will have to pay a small amount, but it will not be anywhere near the £50million that the Clarets are pushing for.
Speaking on talkSPORT on 16 September (11:09am), he said: “The only question is how many extra points was it and whilst it’s difficult for a commission to assess whether it would have been three points, four points, five points, they’ll have a go and it’ll be on a weighted basis.”
“As I say, if they think there is a 10% or 20% chance that Everton would have got four or more less points, then Burnley will win something in that scenario. It’s likely to be a percentage of what they’re asking for.”
“They’ll know the likely range that they’re talking about, which is probably somewhere between £0 and £10m. So, it feels like the sort of amount that should be readily settleable.”
Fine would be a slap on the wrist for Everton
A £10m fine would feel like a victory for the Blues at this point, as relegation back then would have been absolutely disastrous.
Going down to the Championship would have only put the Toffees in a worse financial position and made it more difficult to recover.
- Everton were famously hit with a 10-point deduction in November 2023, which was later lowered to six points
- In the 2021/22 season, Burnley finished 18th on 35 points, whilst Everton finished 16th on 39 points
- Meaning if the six points were deducted from the Blues in 2022, they would have been relegated instead of Burnley, and that is why they can make the claim
Luckily, the Friedkin Group completed their takeover in December 2024, and the Merseysiders are in a much better position in terms of their overall finances and PSR at the moment.
They will hope to see the back of this case rapidly, so they can move on and put the issues of the Farhad Moshiri era well and truly behind them.
Brighter times are on the horizon, they do not need to relive the past and the new ownership should not bear the consequences from Moshiri’s bad management.
