Premier League club want ex-Everton defender to be their new manager in ‘stunning’ twist

Everton will be looking at their decision to re-hire David Moyes even more fondly, with a managerial scramble set to take place elsewhere in the Premier League.

Moyes has been heavily praised for his impact at Everton, after the Toffees took the decision to bring the Scot back to the club at the start of the year.

The Toffees sit sixth in the Premier League, having won two of their opening fixtures before being held to a 0-0 draw at the Hill Dickinson Stadium by Aston Villa.

Everton sacked Sean Dyche in January, with the former Burnley boss leaving the Toffees just a point away from the relegation zone.

And the Blues have gone from strength to strength under Moyes, who was key in convincing Jack Grealish to sign on loan for Everton.

West Ham consider former Everton men Slaven Bilic and Sean Dyche

Graham Potter is facing the sack at West Ham after leading the Hammers to just six wins from his first 23 Premier League games in charge.

The former Chelsea boss arrived at the London Stadium just days before Moyes returned to Everton, but the two managers could not have experienced a more different opening nine months in charge.

In comparison, the Scot has delivered four more wins in his 23 games in charge, and 15 more points.

The two will face off at the end of the month in what could well be Potter’s final game, should the Englishman not complete a turnaround in form.

In a move described as “stunning”, talkSPORT reported on Thursday that Slaven Bilic is a contender for the job should Potter be sacked, with Dyche and the recently sacked Nuno Espirito Santo also under consideration.

As a player, Bilic signed for Everton from West Ham in 1997, playing 30 games for the Toffees before departing for Croatian side Hajduk Split in 1999.

Sean Dyche would be the wrong choice for West Ham

By no means did Dyche do a bad job in charge of Everton. The Englishman kept the Toffees up at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, and lifted them further away from the drop in the following season.

Under the former Burnley manager, the Blues won just 31 per cent of their matches and recorded just 1.06 points per game, according to Sofascore.

The problem was that Dyche could never take Everton further than that. He may well have led his players away from the relegation zone had he not been sacked in January, but decision-makers at the Hill Dickinson Stadium wanted more than that.

The same can be said of West Ham. Just over two years ago, under Moyes, the Hammers finished ninth in the Premier League and were confident they could push on back towards European qualification in the next season.

Hire Dyche, and West Ham will, in all likelihood, stay in the Premier League. Hire a fresh, braver option, and the East London club can look higher up the table.
