Wayne Rooney reveals Everton vs Liverpool incident which left him ‘raging’
Wayne Rooney has experience of the tense clashes between Everton and Liverpool.
Everton face Liverpool at Anfield on 20 September, with David Moyes looking to put a dismal record at the Reds’ home firmly in the past.
Moyes has failed to beat Liverpool at their home ground on 23 attempts, in stints with the Blues, West Ham, Sunderland and Manchester United.
Everton will be looking to firm up their European qualification hopes by securing a famous victory over Arne Slot’s side.

Wayne Rooney was put in a police van after Merseyside derby
Everton’s visits to Liverpool have brought few memorable moments for Moyes, even Rooney could not inspire them to victory in his tenure.
The ex-Blues striker has revealed a hilarious incident that happened to him after a derby clash, though, where he was put in a police van.
He revealed that he was asked to sign shirts for the officers, but refused to do so.
Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Podcast on 19 September, he said: “There was one time, I come out the stadium and the police pulled me over, right outside the stadium.
“Big police van, pulled me over, think I was in my little KA, I can see everyone looking, Everton and Liverpool fans.
“They get me out the car, into the back of the van… and they pull shirts out, asking me to sign the shirts, I was raging, fuming.”
Asked whether he signed them by his co-host Kelly Somers, he said: “No, no chance, I was fuming.”
Everton vs Liverpool is known as the ‘friendly derby’
The Merseyside derby is known as the friendly derby, as the rivalry between the sides splits families, and fans used to sit next to each other back in the day.
It has grown a more toxic reputation in recent years, with the animosity between the clubs growing in that time.
- Liverpool have tasted success in the last few years
- Everton have been fighting for survival and battling financial insecurities
- Both sides enter this derby in great form
There have been several high-profile incidents on the pitch, such as James Tarkowski’s challenge on Alexis Mac Allister at Anfield, and the clash between Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure in the final Goodison Derby.
Luckily, there have not been many off the pitch; it remains primarily a peaceful occasion despite the hostilities between the teams, as they fight for dominance of the local area, which has gone in the Reds’ favour recently.
Rooney’s police story is brilliant, and if they have got time to do that, then there must not be much kicking off around the ground after the contest.
