Everton told what they must do against Liverpool to secure famous derby win
Everton should go into today’s Merseyside Derby full of confidence after a bright start to the season.
David Moyes has introduced more attacking flair into his side through the acquisitions of Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and it has paid dividends so far.
After a disappointing defeat to Leeds on the opening day, they have picked up two wins and a draw and currently sit sixth in the table.
The Toffees have certainly shown enough to suggest they can present a formidable challenge to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.

David Moyes tipped to loosen reigns and allow his team to attack Liverpool
Moyes hasn’t won at Anfield in 20 attempts. He has failed to win there with Everton, Manchester United, Sunderland and West Ham.
Nevertheless, he has been tipped to loosen the reins on his Everton side during Saturday’s Merseyside Derby.
Speaking on his TalkSPORT weekend breakfast show, Tony Cascarino suggested that attacking The Reds could prove to be a more intelligent strategy than sitting back and playing for the draw.
He said: “When David Moyes took the job he said that he didn’t want to fight a relegation battle, and with that you’ve seen Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall come in, you’ve seen Jack Grealish come in.
“Of course, he’ll be stubborn in the way that his teams defend, but I’d like to think he’d go there with a little bit more ambition because I think you’re going to see that with Everton this year.
“When you’ve gone and got two players like I’ve just spoken about, it gives you a bit more hope of offensively causing Liverpool problems because Liverpool’s weakest part of their team this year has been defensively when they’ve giving away chances.”
When did Everton last win at Anfield?
Everton’s last win at Anfield was in February 2021 during the Covid-19 lockdowns. A Toffees side managed by Carlo Ancelotti won 2-0 thanks to an early goal from Richarlison and a late penalty from Gylfi Sigurdsson.
That was their first against Liverpool since 2010 and their first at Anfield since 1999.
Everton have played at Anfield four times since that victory and lost all four games. Diogo Jota scored the winner in a 1-0 victory in the most recent of those defeats.
| Date | Result |
| 20 February 2021 | Liverpool 0 Everton 2 |
| 24 April 2022 | Liverpool 2 Everton 0 |
| 13 Febraury 2023 | Liverpool 2 Everton 0 |
| 21 October 2023 | Liverpool 2 Everton 0 |
| 2 April 2025 | Liverpool 1 Everton 0 |
It has been common for Everton to sit back and try to counter-attack Liverpool at Anfield, but Moyes has built a team that can keep the ball well and hurt Liverpool if they play with more attacking intent.
Liverpool have conceded a lot of goals this season and have had to bail themselves out with late goals several times.
If Moyes instructs his team to go for the throat on Saturday, he could put himself in a good position to break his Anfield hoodoo.
