Everton settlement needed to end Burnley legal case early as timeline emerges from London
Everton are locked in a legal battle with fellow Premier League club Burnley.
Everton were docked six points in 2023 for breaching Profit and Sustainability rules, in the chaotic Farhad Moshiri era.
The deductions did not come in the same season as the breaches, and Burnley have argued that Everton should have been relegated instead of them in 2022.
The Turf Moor outfit are seeking £50million in damages, and the case could have huge ramifications for the Toffees and the Premier League.

Everton vs Burnley legal battle timeline emerges
Everton could be forced to pay up to £10m, according to finance expert Stefan Borson, nowhere near the amount that Scott Parker’s side want.
A timeline has now emerged for the case, as Mike Keegan reported in the print edition of the Daily Mail (page 59) on 22 September that the situation is not likely to end soon, unless a settlement is reached.
It states that the hearing is set to conclude in the middle of next month in London, with no timescale on a verdict at the moment.

Everton would be happy with £10m settlement
The Blues would surely take a settlement as low as the one Borson believes that they will have to pay, as it will feel like a slap on the wrist.
Relegation would have been a disaster for the Toffees, as going down to the Championship would have only put them in an even worse financial position.
- Everton were famously hit with a 10-point deduction in November 2023, which was later lowered to six points
- In the 2021/22 season, Burnley finished 18th on 35 points, whilst Everton finished 16th on 39 points
- Meaning if the six points were deducted from the Blues in 2022, they would have been relegated instead of Burnley, and that is why they can make the claim
The Friedkin Group have steadied the ship since their takeover was completed in December 2024, but there were dark times for Evertonians when the future of their club was in danger.
They will hope that the case can be concluded as soon as possible, so the Moshiri era can be lodged firmly in the past, and they can move on to brighter and better things that look like a genuine possibility under the new ownership.
