Paul Merson shakes his head in disbelief at David Moyes mess-up at Everton

David Moyes will hope his team can bounce back against West Ham on Monday, after a disappointing week.

Everton lost 2-0 to Wolves on Tuesday, in what was a disappointingly premature end to any hopes of Carabao Cup success this season.

Marshall Munetsi and Tolu Arokodare scored for the home side, after the Toffees had made several changes to the side that lost at Liverpool last week.

Moyes was criticised for his line-up against Wolves, with the likes of Dwight McNeil handed the start despite playing very few minutes this season so far.

The decision was made especially odd after James Tarkowski had revealed that Moyes’ priority at Everton is to win a trophy.

Paul Merson left bemused by David Moyes decision

Everton’s attitude was criticised after the Wolves loss, with the Toffees seemingly taking their opponents for granted.

The home side sit rock bottom of the Premier League, having lost all five of their opening games, but Moyes would have known not to take any game lightly.

The manager’s decision to leave several of his key players out of the starting line-up suggested otherwise, however, with Everton paying for it.

And given the fact that the Blues were set for a six-day break before the visit of West Ham, Moyes’ choice was even more bemusing.

Paul Merson was quite literally shaking his head when asked on Saturday about the Scot’s approach towards the game.

“I thought it was a bigger game for Everton than it was Wolves,” the former Arsenal midfielder told Sky Sports News.

“And this weekend is a bigger game for Wolves than it is for Everton. It was a massive game for Everton and they missed a trick.”

David Moyes will be full of regret after cup exit

Squad rotation is always going to play into any manager’s thinking, but Moyes undoubtedly had bigger priorities on Tuesday.

Everton were coming off the back of a disappointing loss, and could have done with a pick-me-up before Monday’s clash against West Ham.

And the thirst for a trophy continues to grow among fans of the Toffees, with May this year marking 30 years since Everton’s last major honour.

Moyes will have another chance when the FA Cup kicks off next year, but the Scot will not reflect lightly on Tuesday’s scenes.
