Troy Deeney surprised by what Everton player told him face-to-face about David Moyes

Troy Deeney was left surprised after what he was told about David Moyes by one of the Scot’s players at Everton.

Moyes has received huge praise for his impact at Everton since arriving in January, after Sean Dyche had left the Toffees fighting relegation.

The 62-year-old’s second spell at the club have seen the Blues go from strength to strength, although the last week has served as a disappointing blip.

Last week saw Liverpool narrowly beat Everton 2-1, with Hugo Ekitike’s first-half goal ultimately proving the difference between the sides.

And on Tuesday, Everton lost 2-0 to Wolves in the Carabao Cup on what was a hugely disappointing night for the Toffees.

Michael Keane reveals David Moyes insight to Troy Deeney

Moyes has ruled Jarrad Branthwaite out of Monday’s clash against West Ham, meaning Michael Keane will make his sixth straight Premier League appearance for the Toffees.

The defender has impressed this season alongside James Tarkowski, despite being just weeks away from leaving at the end of last season.

The 32-year-old’s contract was set to expire, and Everton had even lined up a deal with Brighton to sign Adam Webster as a replacement.

But at the last minute, a deal was found that would see Keane sign a new contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and Moyes will be glad it was.

Deeney had a face-to-face interview with Keane, with the defender explaining the difference in training-ground processes between his past two managers.

When asked about by Sam Matterface if he was “surprised” by Keane’s willingness to talk about the difference in details given by Moyes and Dyche, Deeney told talkSPORT on Friday: “Yeah, a little bit.

“But he was making the point that there’s a new style now.

“He said it himself, Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye – give them the ball and let them do what they do. It’ll be interesting to see how Everton do this season.”

Everton’s decision paying dividends

When Everton parted ways with Dyche, some saw the decision as harsh. The former Burnley man had saved the Toffees from relegation twice already, and may well have done it again.

But the Friedkin Group wanted a manager who would look higher up the Premier League.

In Moyes, they have got exactly that. The Scot’s side currently sit 10th in the league this season, and will hope to finish in the top half for the first time since 2021.
