Seamus Coleman admission shows that Everton have the wrong mentality

Everton’s Carabao Cup exit to Wolves still stings for a lot of supporters.

Everton were eliminated from the League Cup in the third round, as they lost to the struggling Premier league outfit at Molineux on 23 September.

David Moyes was slammed for his decision to make seven Everton changes, as he refreshed his squad and gave fringe players the chance to impress.

The likes of Tim Iroegbunam and Dwight McNeil did not take their opportunity to force their way into Everton’s team, and they crashed out, meaning the FA Cup is their only chance of silverware.

Seamus Coleman makes new Everton admission about Wolves loss

Seamus Coleman is far from an Everton regular at the moment, but he was given a run-out against the Old Gold in an unfamiliar position.

The Ireland star has defended Moyes‘ decision to make so many changes, and feels like the responsibility should be on the players.

In quotes reported by the Liverpool Echo on 2 October, he said: “Every Premier League manager uses the Carabao Cup to give players some minutes. It’s a squad game these days and the players need time on the pitch.

“We did the same, but sometimes, it just doesn’t work out. It’s never easy to hit the ground running when you haven’t been playing regularly but there are no excuses from me – the performance on the night wasn’t good enough over the 90 minutes.”

Coleman’s admission should be a major concern for supporters, especially given his experience within the squad.

David Moyes has to take blame for Everton cup exit

Coleman‘s admission is a sign of a mentality issue with the Toffees, as the fact that Moyes made so many changes is a major issue.

The fact that he has turned the blame onto the players is not right, as the manager should have picked more of his first-team players.

The Blues did not play until the Monday, when they faced West Ham, so there would have been plenty of rest for the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish if they had been given the nod.

Everton should be going all out for the cup, especially given that they have not won one for nearly 30 years, but Moyes chose to rest players instead.

It is the sign of a huge problem, in terms of their priorities, if Coleman is resolving the boss of blame and putting it on himself and his teammates.

Moyes needs to turn that around, the sooner, the better.
