Players you didn’t know played for both Everton and Crystal Palace – including Merseyside Derby hero

Everton host Crystal Palace on Sunday, but the sides have a few familiar faces between them.

Everton will be looking to break Palace’s impressive run of 19 games unbeaten in the Hill Dickinson Stadium contest on 5 October.

The likes of Nigel Martyn, Yannick Bolasie and James McCarthy are players who have played for both teams that most fans will be aware of.

However, Goodison News looks at players that supporters may not remember played for the two clubs.

Andy Johnson

Everton were disappointed in their recent clash with Liverpool, but the 2006 meeting at Goodison Park was iconic for the Blues.

Andy Johnson’s finest moment in a Toffees shirt was when he scored two against the Reds in a 3-0 win in David Moyes’ first reign in charge.

The 44-year-old played for Crystal Palace from 2002-2006, notching 83 goals in 158 matches for the Eagles before his move to Merseyside.

He would score 22 goals for the Blues in 74 appearances, before leaving for Fulham in 2008 for an eight-figure sum.

Cenk Tosun

Cenk Tosun is remembered by Toffees supporters for a dismal spell with the club, in which he notched just 11 goals in 61 matches.

He joined the Merseysiders in 2018 for a reported £27million fee, but his time at Goodison was vastly underwhelming considering the price tag.

The Turkey international made five appearances for the South Londoners on loan from the Blues in 2020, scoring one goal in his short-lived spell with them.

He departed L4 to return to his home country with Besiktas in 2022, and moved to Fenerbahce in 2024.

James Vaughan

James Vaughan is Everton’s youngest-ever goalscorer, and still holds the record for the Premier League’s youngest too.

He notched that goal on his debut against the Eagles in April 2004, and went on to make 61 appearances for the Toffees, with 9 goals.

He would go on several loan spells away from Merseyside, with two spells with Palace in 2010 and 2011, where he notched 9 goals in 30 games for the Selhurst Park club.

He left Everton permanently in the summer of 2011, joining Norwich City on a free transfer, and has since had spells with Sunderland, Wigan Athletic and Tranmere Rovers.

He retired in 2021 and has since been employed as the Blues’ Loans Pathway Manager and then Head of Academy Recruitment & Player Pathways, before his exit earlier this year.
