Everton once held talks for ‘Rolls-Royce’ midfielder, he’s now one of the best in Premier League

Everton were once interested in signing a midfielder who is growing in reputation in the Premier League.

Everton currently sit seventh in the Premier League, having enjoyed a solid start to the season under David Moyes.

Aside from the Toffees’ opening-day defeat to Leeds United, they have looked significantly more competitive than they did last season, and a lot of that is down to the midfield rejig they had in the summer.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has impressed at Everton, though they may not have needed him had they been able to conclude a transfer back in 2023 for a midfielder who is already outperforming several Premier League stars.

Everton wanted to sign Adam Wharton in 2023

Everton have been in transition over the last few years, which led them to some peculiar transfers and transfer targets.

However, before he made the move to Crystal Palace, Adam Wharton was linked with a move to Goodison Park.

That was according to the Daily Mail, who reported back in 2023 that the Toffees had held talks over a potential swap deal including now-Sheffield United forward Tom Cannon.

Of course, nothing materialised, and Wharton ended up putting pen to paper on a deal worth up to £22million at Selhurst Park.

He hit the ground running at Crystal Palace, with Ian Wright labelling him as a “Rolls-Royce” when dissecting his performance on Match of the Day last year.

That assessment has proven to be true already, with Wharton widely considered among the best in the Premier League.

Adam Wharton would have transformed Everton

Everton have an excellent midfield now, but the addition of Wharton would have taken it to a whole new level, especially back in 2023.

At just 21 years old, the Englishman is already catching the eye of several Elite clubs ahead of a potential move, and it could have been the Toffees benefiting from it.

As showcased above, Wharton is a master when it comes to forward passes and breaking the lines, which is something that Everton still lack at times today.

There have been countless missed opportunities on Merseyside over the years, but this could be the biggest one yet, with the 21-year-old showing no signs of slowing down.
