Idrissa Gueye hails ex-Liverpool star after international development – ‘Legend’

Idrissa Gueye continued his positive spell at Everton onto the international stage with Senegal.

Gueye was superb for Everton against West Ham in what was far from an isolated excellent performance at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The midfielder was also excellent last time out, as Gueye helped Everton secure victory against Crystal Palace, as he confronted Adam Wharton and Daichi Kamada.

His qualities have carried forward alongside Everton teammate Iliman Ndiaye for Senegal during the international break.

Supporters on Merseyside may not be greatly appreciative of the fact that Gueye has gone on to show his love for a Liverpool fan favourite.

Idrissa Gueye heaps praise on Sadio Mane

Gueye could have left Everton in the summer as his contract looked set to come to an end with the Toffees, three years after his return.

The ex-Aston Villa man has stuck around and has remained as a consistent force for the Blues under David Moyes this campaign.

The 36-year-old is the ideal role model for the likes of James Garner and Tim Iroegbunam, who are growing into bigger roles in L4.

His importance is reflected on the international stage after playing 160 minutes across two games against South Sudan and Mauritania in the October break.

Senegal have secured a place at the 2026 World Cup off the back of these victories, with Gueye playing a key part.

Speaking after a 4-0 win on 14 October, the Everton man expressed admiration for former Liverpool man Sadio Mane and praised him for his work for the national team.

He said: “I want to congratulate the whole team, especially Sadio Mané, who has once again shown us the way. He is a legend for Senegal. In 2018, in 2022, and today still, he has always stepped up.

Against the DRC, we were losing 2-0 at halftime, but we managed to fight back. This is proof that we are a great team.

Mane feels lucky to play with Everton ace Gueye

The Anfield favourite was once one of the best players in the entire Premier League, having won the title with the Reds.

Mane also enjoyed playing Everton, contributing to seven goals against the Toffees throughout his time in England.

That hasn’t hampered his relationship with Blues regular Gueye as the duo continue to link up for Senegal at 33 and 36 respectively.

The Al Nassr man has previously spoken out about how fortunate he is to play alongside the Goodison star on the international stage.

Speaking in January 2024, he said: “When you see someone like Gana [Gueye] running the entire field, I just feel lucky to have teammates like them.

This is proof of just how excellent the ex-PSG man is, even if he isn’t shy about showing love for a Liverpool legend.
