David Moyes must fix key issue vs Sunderland as Everton do something for first time since 1996

Everton’s streak at the Hill Dickinson Stadium came to an end at the hands of Tottenham on Sunday.

David Moyes had received plenty of praise for the start to the season that Everton made, but after two losses following the return of Premier League football, the Toffees have slipped into 14th in the table.

Everton’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham was an unfair scoreline, as yet again, Beto came under scrutiny for missing guilt-edged opportunities for the Blues.

Regardless of missed chances, the Toffees never give themselves a fighting chance in the game, as Everton did something that they haven’t done since 1996.

Everton conceded three headed goals for the first time since 1996 vs Spurs

Despite tallying more shots and possession than Tottenham, the visitors were the ones who ended up walking away with three points.

All three of Tottenham’s goals were headers, something which may have come as a surprise to Moyes.

The last time Everton conceded three headed goals came all the way back in 1996, when the Toffees played Wimbledon.

The likes of James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, and Jake O’Brien all pose big aerial presences, but were all beaten to the ball on far too many occasions on Sunday.

It’s not something that has been seen that often under Moyes, but he will still need to address the issue ahead of Everton’s clash with Sunderland on Monday night.

Sunderland will pose an aerial threat vs Everton

Everton play Sunderland next in the Premier League, as the high-flying Black Cats are yet to lose at the Stadium of Light this season, which is where the Toffees will be travelling to.

The Blues need to be cautious of Sunderland, who sit fourth in the table, as the Black Cats will also pose an aerial threat, just like Tottenham did.

Sunderland are a physical side, and have already scored four goals in the Premier League this season with headers.

Everton defenders will need to be switched on from set-pieces and open play, because if they’re not, Sunderland may grab all the points.
