Ally McCoist surprised at something he saw in Everton loss vs Tottenham

Everton lost 3-0 to Tottenham at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday in a game that had one major talking point.

David Moyes was frustrated that his side couldn’t put away any of their opportunities, with Beto once again coming under pressure for missing another golden chance.

The result marked the first time the Toffees suffered a defeat at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and Everton dropped to 14th in the Premier League.

Iliman Ndiaye was the star performer on what was otherwise an incredibly disappointing day for Everton, and VAR was at the centre of controversy yet again.

Ally McCoist believes Tottenham’s second goal should have been disallowed

Despite starting the game well, Everton swiftly fell behind to Micky Van de Ven‘s header following a corner.

The Dutch defender scored again on the stroke of half-time from another corner, and Pape Matar Sarr secured Tottenham’s win late on.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 29 October, Ally McCoist believes that the second goal of the match should’ve been disallowed for a foul on Jordan Pickford.

He said: “It was really uncharacteristic to see Everton defend so poorly at set-pieces.

“I thought it was a free-kick for Everton when Van de Ven pushed Pickford. There’s no real consistency with those sorts of decisions.”

Jake O’Brien’s goal was disallowed after Ndiaye and Grealish were said to have obscured Vicario’s view when standing in an offside position, and Everton fans may feel aggrieved that Van de Ven’s second wasn’t overturned.

Consistency among refereeing decisions has always been an issue in the Premier League, and since the introduction of VAR, the lines have never been more blurred when it comes to every offence that takes place in the box.

Referee Craig Pawson doesn’t have a good record officiating Everton, and on Sunday, he displayed yet another performance with uncertainty in his decision-making.

Everton conceded three headers against Spurs, the first time this has happened since 1996.

Everton must rectify mistakes against Tottenham ahead of match vs Sunderland

The fixtures don’t get any easier for the Toffees, as they take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Monday.

Saturday saw the Toffees concede their first two goals from set-pieces this season, and Moyes must address this issue immediately.

As McCoist said, this is such an uncharacteristic problem for Everton to have, and Sunderland have been notoriously efficient from set-piece situations this season.

With the hosts going into the game full of confidence, the Toffees must do whatever it takes to avoid a repeat of what against Spurs.
