Sunderland vs Everton: Players you didn’t know played for both teams
Everton will travel to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday.
David Moyes will want to get back on track when Everton face Sunderland after Tottenham defeated Everton 3-0 at home last week.
The game will promise to offer end-to-end action as both teams look to advance their position in the table.
And the two sides have had a fair share of players who have represented both teams down the years.

Jordan Pickford
Before Jordan Pickford surpassed George Banks’ clean sheet record for England last international break, he climbed through the ranks of Sunderland’s academy.
After several loan spells, he made his debut for the Black Cats on 9 January 2016, in a 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Arsenal, before he signed for Everton on 15 June 2017 on a five-year contract.
At the time, the £25million fee with the possibility of rising to £30m in add-ons, made him the third most expensive British goalkeeper of all time as well as the Toffees’ second most expensive signing.
Pickford has since become a leader for Moyes’ side, and in the 2023-24 season, he was named Everton’s Player of the Season for the third consecutive season.
- Pickford has made 328 appearances for Everton
- He signed a new four-year contract on 16 October 2025
After a difficult game in Everton’s home defeat to Tottenham, Pickford will be hoping to keep a clean sheet against his former side.

Bryan Oviedo
Bryan Oviedo signed for Everton on 31 August 2012 for an undisclosed fee before he made his debut as an 85th-minute substitute in a 3-0 away league victory over Swansea City.
- He made 68 appearances in all competitions for Everton
- He netted two goals and provided nine assists
While he experienced some highs during his time at Everton, injuries defined the majority of his career at the Premier League side.
Oviedo signed for Sunderland from Everton along with teammate Darron Gibson on 30 January 2017.
Furthermore, he made his debut for the Black Cars on 4 February 2017 in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Oviedo returned to FC Copenhagen in July 2019 after two years at Sunderland.
Jack Rodwell
Jack Rodwell climbed through Everton’s academy ranks and broke a record on his senior debut to become the youngest player to represent the Toffees in Europe.
Indeed, Rodwell debuted for Everton in their 3-2 victory over Dutch side AZ at 16 years old and 284 days.
During Moyes’ first stint in charge, the versatile defender signed a five-year contract with the Toffees in 2009, where he remained before he signed for Manchester City in August 2012.
Furthermore, Rodwell signed for Sunderland from Man City on 5 August 2014, where he made 76 appearances in four years for the Black Cats.
His final club, Sydney FC, announced his retirement from professional football on 24 May 2024.
