Jamie Carragher highlights why ‘David Moyes isn’t happy’ with Everton in new Sky Sports reveal

Jamie Carragher has used some new figures to back up exactly why David Moyes “is not too happy” with Everton bosses.

Moyes oversaw Everton’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Monday night, which leaves the Toffees down in 14th place in the Premier League.

Everton’s draw at the Stadium of Light was controversial, but Moyes should ultimately be pleased to have come away with a point.

Focus for Everton has already switched to Fulham, with the Toffees needing to climb further clear of the relegation zone.

Moyes was backed with some new signings in the summer, but he openly admitted he wanted more recruits.

And Carragher has now shared an intriguing statistic that helps to highlight why Moyes is somewhat unhappy.

Everton in bottom three for minutes by Premier League debutants

A supercomputer has predicted Everton to finish 13th this season, which is neither here nor there in terms of what supporters are expecting.

However, the first priority is to ensure relegation is not an issue in the first season at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

While discussing Everton and Sunderland’s transfer business on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football ahead of the game, an interesting statistic flashed up.

PositionTeam% of minutes
1Sunderland83
2Leeds33
3Burnley28
18Everton4
19Fulham3
20Brentford0.5
Minutes by Premier League debutants this season

It showed that Sunderland lead the way for minutes given to Premier League debutants this season with 83 per cent.

Everton are way down on 18th on that list with four per cent, meanwhile, which is above only Fulham (3 per cent) and Brentford (0.5 per cent).

Reacting to that figure, Carragher was quick to say: “It shows why Moyes isn’t too happy with the recruitment in the summer.”

What this basically means is that the vast majority of players used by Everton this season were either at the club last season or have played in the division with another club.

Who did Everton sign from outside the Premier League?

Jack Grealish has been superb for Everton since joining on loan from Manchester City, with that one of nine signings made in the summer transfer window.

Of those, only Thierno Barry, Adam Aznou and Merlin Rohl had never previously played in the English top flight.

Barry has been a regular, but Aznou has yet to feature due to injury and Rohl has been restricted to three substitute appearances.

That explains why Everton are so low down on that list, and Carragher does have a point in what he says. Indeed, Moyes has admitted as much in saying he wanted more signings.

But this is the hand Moyes and Everton have been dealt, and the squad is strong enough – and good enough – to get through until January without any real threat of being dragged into a relegation battle.
