Beto will be licking his lips as Everton open talks over January loan-to-buy transfer

Beto has been struggling for form drastically at Everton so far in 2025-26.

The Guinea-Bissau international ended the last Premier League campaign in a fine vein of goalscoring form, but that has quickly become a distant memory for him after a typically slow start this time around.

Beto has been a source of frustration at Everton for several seasons now, as he continues to look like a streaky striker whose confidence dictates almost everything about his game.

However, it has quickly become apparent that David Moyes needs more than that if he is to lead the team up the league table, and with that in mind, things could be about to dramatically change in January.

James Ward-Prowse addition to unlock Beto as Everton talks underway

Beto’s commitment to Everton and the work rate that he provides has never been in question, but his finishing and instincts when it comes to scoring goals have often left a lot to be desired.

The 27-year-old simply isn’t prolific enough to be a regular success in the Premier League, but that could now be about to change in January with Everton eyeing up a move for James Ward-Prowse.

The West Ham star has been cast adrift from the squad after Nuno Espirito Santo’s arrival in E20, and as such, the Merseysiders have opened talks over a potential loan deal with the option to buy, according to Hammers News.

Ward-Prowse’s career has stalled somewhat after he also struggled for gametime during a loan spell with Nottingham Forest last year, but he still has plenty to give as a top-flight midfielder.

The 30-year-old is famed for his set-piece ability, and if the Toffees could add one of the best dead-ball deliveries around to their ranks, then it would surely have Beto licking his lips.

With even greater quality coming into the box, that might provide him with the additional opportunities that he needs to help kick-start his season.

On the other hand, if Beto still cannot find the back of the net regularly with a creator of Ward-Prowse’s quality in the group, then the writing is surely on the wall for him.

David Moyes once branded James Ward-Prowse ‘world class’

Everton’s pursuit of Ward-Prowse has likely stemmed from Moyes and his admiration of the quality that the England international can provide.

The Scot signed the midfielder for West Ham for a fee of £30million in the summer of 2023, when he delivered striking praise to the former Southampton star.

The Toffees boss branded Ward-Prowse’s dead-ball delivery as “world class,” according to the Daily Mail in November 2023, and bemoaned the lack of a finish from the rest of his group.

Moyes’ fondness for the outcast West Ham star surely makes the Hill Dickinson Stadium the perfect destination for him in January, although a return to Southampton, who are also interested, will surely also be tempting.

Everton appear to have made their intentions clear ahead of the opening of the window, and Moyes will be hoping that this deal could give Beto the extra push that he needs.
