Seamus Coleman hails ‘exciting’ player Everton want to sign – he’s a ‘real threat’

Everton are on a mission to qualify for Europe in 2025/26, and while that is a possibility, David Moyes will need to fine-tune his squad in January.

Firstly, Everton are in the market for a new striker after watching Beto and Thierno Barry score just two Premier League goals between them.

Everton were linked with a loan move for Ivan Toney from Al-Ahli, although his high wages make a transfer impossible to secure.

Meanwhile, Everton have also been linked with Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, seeing a temporary move for the 21-year-old as a possibility.

Ferguson joined Roma on loan in the summer but has yet to find the net in seven Serie A appearances and could return to the Premier League.

What Seamus Coleman has said about Evan Ferguson

Once one of the most promising strikers to emerge in England’s top-flight, Ferguson’s career has spiralled downwards in the past two seasons.

From netting six in his first 19 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls, the Republic of Ireland international only scored seven in his next 40 matches in the competition.

Admittedly, he came off the bench for many of those matches, but he has lost his way in recent seasons. Perhaps working under Moyes could help him rediscover his best form.

Ex-Toffees scout Bryan King told Goodison News that Ferguson would be a typical Moyes signing, although he did question his injury history.

Everton stalwart Seamus Coleman could also be of that agreement, after previously hailing him as a ‘real threat’.

“Evan has a real maturity about him for such a young player,” Coleman once said. “It’s exciting to see someone so talented and composed at his age. He’s a real threat in front of goal.”

David Moyes can’t afford to take Ferguson gamble

Whilst The Friedkin Group signed Ferguson for Roma and would arguably welcome him moving to Merseyside, Moyes can ill-afford to gamble on the youngster.

The Scotsman needs to sign an upgrade on the confidence shot Beto in January, but the statistics prove that Ferguson isn’t even an improvement.

Beto is known for his wasteful finishing, and even he boasted a better conversion rate than the Irishman in 2024/25, evincing that he isn’t the ideal signing.

Realistically, Moyes needs to sign a clinical striker who can hit the ground running, and in this day and age, they don’t come cheap.
