David Moyes dealt latest Everton injury blow as surgery confirmed ahead of Manchester United

David Moyes has revealed that Merlin Rohl will miss Monday’s game against Manchester United after suffering an injury setback.

Rohl was injured for Everton soon after arriving from Freiburg, with the German making just four Premier League appearances so far this season.

The 23-year-old had spent much of his time in Germany on the injury table, too, with several issues affecting the midfielder over the years.

But Rohl has impressed for Everton in his brief appearances on the pitch, leaving the Toffees keen to see more.

Rohl could even play up front for Everton, with Moyes open to all possibilities amid the poor form of Beto and Thierno Barry.

Merlin Rohl set for period on the sideline

Despite playing so few minutes this season, Rohl has stacked up some rather impressive statistics.

The 23-year-old’s debut against Aston Villa saw him play just 24 minutes, yet in that time, the midfielder created a chance, took a shot, made two tackles and won five duels.

But with such an energetic and aggressive style, injuries can often follow, and they have in droves for Rohl, unfortunately.

Speaking on Friday ahead of the Manchester United game on 24 November, Moyes confirmed that the German would be out for several more weeks, with surgery being confirmed.

“Unfortunately, Merlin had an operation a week last Monday on his hernia, which is going to keep him out for a few weeks,” the Scot said.

“But hopefully by the time we get round to December, he’ll be pretty ready and hopefully fit to go again.”

Everton must take their time with Rohl

Anyone who would have looked at Rohl’s stats from Germany would have been well aware of the midfielder’s history with injuries.

The 23-year-old was never too far from the injury table at Freiburg and missed many games over the course of his time there.

Everton will hope surgery can be a good thing for Rohl; however, with this latest procedure hoped to fix the problem at the source.

But the Toffees must take their time with the midfielder, with any unnecessary pushing of his recovery process to be avoided at all costs.
