Premier League release statement after Manchester United vs Everton controversy

Everton were reduced to 10 players early on against Manchester United after Idrissa Gana Gueye was given his marching orders.

Just 13 minutes in, David Moyes’ game plan had gone out of the window.

Everton had already announced a risky lineup, with Tim Iroegbunam surprisingly dropped.

However, an injury to Seamus Coleman was quickly followed by a scuffle between Gueye and Michael Keane, with the Senegal international given his marching orders.

Now, the Premier League have explained why the midfielder was sent off.

Idrissa Gueye sent off for violent conduct against Manchester United

Gueye is normally a reliable player for Everton.

Despite his age, Gueye’s experience has been invaluable at Everton, which has helped him maintain his spot in the lineup.

However, Gueye completely lost his head shortly after Bruno Fernandes fired an effort over the bar.

The midfielder confronted Keane, with Gueye then raising his hand towards the defender.

Now, the Premier League Match Centre via X on 24 November has confirmed that VAR checked the incident and confirmed that violent conduct did take place, with the action deemed to be a clear strike to the face of Keane.

Gueye the first Premier League player to be sent off for fighting teammate since 2008

While Premier League players fighting their teammates is rare, it has happened on occasion.

The most famous incident is perhaps the scenes between Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer in 2005 at Newcastle, with both stars being given their marching orders.

According to BBC Sport, the last incident of this happening before Gueye’s red card occurred on 28 December 2008.

Ricardo Fuller fought with Andy Griffin at Stoke City against West Ham, with the former star being sent off.
