Everton ready for Premier League rarity with new January transfer agreement

Everton could be in the market for another striker in the upcoming January window.

Santiago Castro is the first name to emerge on the shortlist, with Beto and Thierno Barry continuing to struggle in the Premier League.

Everton could sign Castro for just above £30million, with the Bologna striker on smaller-than-expected wages, making a move possible.

Despite larger spending than ever in the Premier League over recent years, it does remain rare for clubs to splash the cash in the middle of the season.

Everton open door to headline January transfers

Everton are looking better than ever financially since the Friedkin Group confirmed its takeover.

With the balance sheet healthier and the Hill Dickinson Stadium move a roaring success, the doors have been opened to January signings.

Dan Plumley doubled down on that, admitting that it would be rare for any Premier League club to spend over £30million on a player in any January window.

The football finance expert did warn that Everton will still need to be careful with losses throughout the window, but the door is certainly open.

“I think for any Premier League club to spend that amount of money on a striker in January, in that mid-table group, is a rarity,” Plumley exclusively told Goodison News.

“It’s not impossible, though.

With the way that Everton’s finances are, they have still got to be careful of the losses and things like that, it’s not like everything has changed overnight, but the restructure of the way the club are operating under the new ownership, they are in a very different spot.

It’s probably not something we’ve seen them do in recent years, but they’ve got a bit of a problem in that area, and if they are looking to kick on, it may be a bit of risk and reward in January.

It’s not risk-free, and that is a big amount of money to spend in January.”

Premier League spending only going one way

Castro has been described as another Carlos Tevez, so this could be a massively exciting transfer.

It took Manchester City and Omar Marmoush last season to break the seven-year-long record of the most expensive January striker signing in the Premier League.

That was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal, and while Castro would not cost Everton that much, it shows that headline striker moves are rare midway through the season.
