Everton surely set for formation change as David Moyes is let down again by ‘superb’ star

David Moyes may look to change his formation going forward after Carlos Alcaraz’s lacklustre display against Nottingham Forest.

The Argentine has been given a run in the team in recent weeks, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall proving to be more effective for Everton as a central midfielder.

This has allowed Alcaraz to come into the starting XI as an attacking midfielder, but he has done little to impress so far.

Alcaraz was poor in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest despite the big victory.

Now, Moyes must consider a potential formation change to compensate for the Argentine’s disappointing form.

David Moyes must consider playing without an attacking midfielder

With Alcaraz clearly underperforming at Everton and Dewsbury-Hall better as a deeper midfielder, Moyes simply has to consider changing the formation.

This is no doubt a disappointing development, with Alan Shearer once labelling Alcaraz as “superb”.

Ridding himself of an attacking midfielder would allow the Toffees to add further quality to their starting XI by playing those who are in form.

Moyes could add a defensive midfielder to the mix, especially now that Idrissa Gueye is back from suspension. This could prevent the Toffees from capitulating at the back like in the Newcastle defeat.

Another possible route is to play two up top and give Thierno Barry much-needed support as he continues to adapt to the Premier League.

Nevertheless, Moyes simply has to consider ridding himself of an attacking midfielder, at least until he can buy a quality player to star in this position.

Everton’s European chances assessed

While the Alcaraz situation is unfortunate, Everton remain in the hunt for European football.

The victory has left them sixth in the Premier League, just two points off Crystal Palace in fourth.

Opta on 8 December believes that the Toffees have a 3.93 per cent chance of reaching the Champions League at the end of the season, while Europa League qualification is slightly higher at 4.26 per cent.

However, it remains to be seen if Everton can continue to consistently produce results to maintain their position.
