Brian Sorensen shares exactly what he said to Everton Women players after Arsenal lesson
Brian Sorensen urged his Everton players to keep their heads up after their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at Goodison Park.
Everton secured a famous 1-0 win over Chelsea last Sunday, inflicting the first Women’s Super League defeat on the West London side since May 2024.
However, the Toffees were unable to repeat their heroics against high-flying Arsenal, who came away from Merseyside with all three points.
The Gunners were 2-1 up at the break, with Honoka Hayashi’s equaliser sandwiched between goals from Katie McCabe and Alessia Russo.
Everton failed to threaten the Arsenal defence in the second half, and Olivia Smith added a third late on to take the game beyond the home side’s reach.
Everton have to accept Arsenal defeat
Everton sit 10th in the WSL, 5 points above bottom-side Liverpool after 11 games of the new season.
The Toffees are still yet to pick up a single point at Goodison Park this term, losing all five of the matches they’ve played at home.
Despite another defeat, Sorensen believes his side did all they could to take the challenge to the Champions League holders.
| Stats | Everton | Arsenal |
| Goals | 1 | 3 |
| Shots | 3 | 22 |
| Shots on Target | 2 | 10 |
| Corners | 0 | 12 |
| Possession | 29% | 71% |
Speaking after the game, Sorensen told Everton’s website: “The girls tried everything they could, but Arsenal are a very good team. They played extremely fast.
“We tried to do what we did against Chelsea by riding the storm, but they got into good positions. I said to the girls that some days you just have to lift your head and accept you’re playing a very good team.”
Everton living dangerously in WSL
Everton beat Liverpool 4-1 on the opening day of the WSL season, getting the new campaign off to a very positive start.
However, the Toffees have picked up just one other league victory since, the shock triumph over Chelsea, and are languishing at the wrong end of the table.
While their WSL status is not in any immediate danger due to Liverpool’s horrific form, Sorenson will be desperate for his side to turn their fortunes around sooner rather than later.
Everton’s tough run in the league continues after the winter break, as they face league leaders Manchester City in the first game back on 11 January.
