Door opens for Everton to sign one of the Premier League’s best defenders for potential bargain

Everton’s chances of sneaking into the European positions in 2025/26 could hinge on a successful January transfer window.

David Moyes is looking to bolster multiple positions in his squad as the Toffees gear up for a busy second half of the campaign.

Everton are in the market for a new striker to help goal-shy duo Thierno Barry and Beto, while a defender and midfielder are also on their agenda.

Moyes has been left light across his back line, especially following Jarrad Branthwaite’s hamstring injury suffered in August, with Jake O’Brien filling in at right-back.

James Tarkowksi and Michael Keane have therefore formed a solid partnership, but they could lend some support.

Everton should go all out to sign Marcos Senesi after promising update

Long-term planning has become essential since The Friedkin Group completed their takeover a year ago, and they must continue that trend in January.

Whilst James Garner sees his contract expire in 2026, as does Keane, and there’s a chance the Englishman leaves on a free transfer.

So, with Everton realising that possibility, an update from BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella has pointed towards who they should sign.

Kinsella revealed that Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi has snubbed multiple contract offers and is expected to depart the Vitality Stadium for nothing next summer.

Senesi has become a vital cog in Andoni Iraola’s project, with the 28-year-old only missing one Premier League game this term through suspension.

News of him potentially leaving will sadden Bournemouth supporters, but anyone who signs him will be delighted, and Everton should do everything they can to land him.

Why Everton should sign Senesi

As it stands, Senesi can agree a pre-contract agreement with any European club in January, meaning he would leave on a free transfer.

Bournemouth would obviously prefer to receive a sum for the Argentine, even if it is just a nominal fee, and he’s easily worth nine figures.

Senesi has established himself as one of the best no-nonsense defenders in the Premier League, but he’s also comfortable with the ball at his feet, averaging 6.61 progressive passes per 90.

In a heavily inflated market, Everton will struggle to find a bigger bargain than the Bournemouth man. So, the Toffees must pounce before he potentially signs a pre-contract agreement elsewhere.
