Dermot Gallagher made to look a fool after what he said about Everton controversy that left David Moyes raging

Everton suffered a defeat against Arsenal last time out, in a game that had its controversies.

Viktor Gyokeres scored the winner from the penalty spot for the Gunners after Jake O’Brien handled the ball in the penalty area.

That proved to be the deciding moment in the game, meaning that David Moyes’ woeful record against Champions League outfits goes on.

However, Everton had a penalty shout of their own, and Dermot Gallagher looked foolish after explaining why it wasn’t given.

Thierno Barry was fouled in the penalty area

Thierno Barry has had a tough time at Everton in general, but his actual performances have usually warranted a lot more.

Despite failing to score against the Gunners, he was a handful, and that was showcased in a coming together with William Saliba.

Both players went to challenge for the ball, but Saliba ended up kicking the underside of Barry’s leg, though no foul was awarded.

Via Sky Sports Ref Watch, Gallagher said: “I think both have gone to kick the ball at the same time. There’s no doubt that Saliba catches Barry.

“I looked through the previous 16 weeks, couldnt fine one similar incident where they gave a penalty.”

As pointed out by Danny Collins on X, he clearly wasn’t very thorough in his checks, with a penalty awarded in Newcastle’s clash with Brentford in November for a near identical incident.

This time, with even less contact than there was on Barry.

What did David Moyes say about Everton controversy?

Understandably so, David Moyes was furious that his side weren’t awarded a penalty, and those feelings will only grow when he sees more replays.

At the time of the incident, the Premier League said: “The referee’s call of no penalty to Everton was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed the contact from Saliba on Barry wasn’t sufficient for a penalty.

In his post-match interview, Moyes clearly didn’t agree with the call, but he explained how he would be punished if he spoke out against it.

Via Sky Sports, the Scottish manager said: “I’d like to, but I’d probably be fined in some ways. You need to find ways at Sky to talk to referees or don’t bother asking me.

“It was a day where just a lot of things didn’t quite go our way. There was quite a few people going down injured. The referee was blowing up for them. It’s a different football club here. We play tough. We expect our referees to do the same.”
