Ex-PGMOL chief calls out Howard Webb after David Moyes outburst at Everton – ‘Do your job’

David Moyes has continued his campaign against refereeing decisions after Everton were not awarded a penalty against Arsenal.

Everton’s Thierno Barry was caught by William Saliba in the 58th-minute of the Hill Dickinson Stadium clash, but the referee did not act.

Moyes’ side have already been on the end of several controversial decisions this season, and Everton met with the PGMOL after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s suspension earlier this season.

However, it seems little progress has been made with the body that oversees referees, as decisions keep going against the Blues.

What did Moyes say about Everton vs Arsenal controversy?

Everton boss Moyes was left furious after the incident, and he continued to talk about in his pre-match press conference.

He was asked about Fulham’s penalty that was given on 22 December, which was very similar to the incident that the Blues did not get one for.

Speaking on 23 December, he said: “I was actually half choking last night when I saw the decision given and ours wasn’t.

“It feels as though it looks like certain clubs get the decisions and other clubs don’t, we seem to be on the latter side of that.

“I think there was one earlier in the season, I think it was Brentford and Van Dijk as well quite similar, and eventually it was given.

“We are disappointed, it wasn’t given on the day, we are looking at others that look as though they have been.

“I don’t really know, they don’t make it easy, they don’t want to have a conversation about it really, they will have, but they don’t really want to, because they probably find it very difficult to explain the decisions.”

Howard Webb and PGMOL called out after Everton incident

Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has hit out at Howard Webb and the organisation that he used to control after Moyes’ outburst.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, he said: “There will always be conflict when it comes to decision-making because of the subjectivity in various laws.

“One of the roles of the Head of Referees, Howard Webb or Hugh Dallas is to communicate with Managers and discuss situations in private.

“If PGMOL are failing to communicate in the instance, I would suggest by not meeting in this instance David Moyes at Finch Farm their training complex, the views of disappointment will be aired in public.

“I have had those discussions in the past with David Moyes, who, whilst not always agreeing, I left with a handshake.

“If the PGMOL believe that the referee and VAR made the correct decision, then defend and support the match officials.

“If the match officials got it wrong, then admit the error, like players, referees make mistakes.

“Do your job, PGMOL, you are a service provider to the stakeholders in the game.”

That is a damning indictment of the referee body, and Hackett is right; they need to reach out to Moyes and address his concerns, because it does seem like the Toffees do not get the rub of the green.
