Tim Iroegbunam will surely panic if David Moyes seals Everton transfer for ‘fabulous’ star

Everton supporters could witness a squad overhaul in the upcoming six months, starting in the January transfer window.

David Moyes is looking to address multiple positions in his squad, with a key focus on adding a new right-back, central midfielder and striker to the ranks.

A centre-forward to rival Thierno Barry and Beto is arguably the most important, but some extra quality and depth in Moyes’ engine room wouldn’t go amiss.

Everton have been linked with a loan move for Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United ahead of January, and he would provide some strong competition to their midfield department.

Tim Iroegbunam could suffer if Everton sign Kobbie Mainoo

In recent matches, Moyes has suffered a plethora of issues in midfield. Idrissa Gueye is currently on AFCON duty with Senegal, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has suffered an injury, which has left only Tim Iroegbunam, Merlin Rohl and James Garner as options.

Against Arsenal and Burnley, the Scotsman preferred Iroegbunam and Garner as a duo, but once everyone is fit, that will change.

Dewsbury-Hall was outstanding in a deeper midfield role for Everton before his injury, and he will return to his starting role, while Garner has become undroppable with his performances.

Adding Mainoo to the mix will only give Moyes a bigger headache, and someone will have to suffer to accommodate the Man United youngster.

Sadly for Iroegbunam, he is the one most likely to miss out, along with Rohl and Gueye, with Dewsbury-Hall, Garner and Mainoo potentially forming a mouth-watering trio.

Iroegbunam has been a consistent performer for the Toffees in 2025/26, but it’s only a matter of time before he finds himself warming the bench, especially if Mainoo joins.

What Gareth Southgate has said about Mainoo

Ruben Amorim is happy to discuss Mainoo’s loan exit from Old Trafford, and what Gareth Southgate once said about the 20-year-old will fill supporters with confidence that he could be a success.

“He’s doing brilliantly,” Southgate said in February 2024 after the UEFA Nations League draw.

“I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such.

“He’s quite a progressive player, but he’s had a fabulous start to his career, and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward.”

Mainoo has found himself out of favour under Amorim after emerging as one of the brightest young talents out of Carrington, so perhaps someone like Moyes can instil come confidence into the midfielder and get him back to his best.
