TFG should be ashamed as staggering Everton reveal emerges vs Sunderland
Everton are in desperate need of new players to boost the quality of their depleted squad.
Chairman Dan Friedkin and The Friedkin Group haven’t planned well for any new transfers, and Everton have seriously paid the price as a result.
The Toffees crashed out of the FA Cup by losing 3-0 to Sunderland on penalties, with the match finishing 1-1 after extra time at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
In the penalty shootout, James Garner, Thierno Barry and Beto all missed from 12 yards, and David Moyes’ side only have the Premier League to play for now.
TFG’s inactivity in the transfer window has been costly, and Everton’s bench against Sunderland was seriously alarming.
Everton field an incredibly inexperienced bench vs Sunderland
With Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gueye at AFCON, the Toffees already knew they’d be without two key players across the festive period.
However, an injury to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has seen their form take a hit, while Jack Grealish has also struggled for fitness.
This has left Moyes with few senior players to choose from, and young Harrison Armstrong, who was recently recalled from his loan spell at Preston North End, was among those to start against the Black Cats.
On the bench, just three players had featured for Everton’s senior team, with Barry being the only notable player the Toffees have turned to this season.
Of course, Friedkin couldn’t plan for poor luck with injuries, but it shows how inept he has been when planning the squad in the summer.
It’s unfortunate for Moyes, who is doing a good job for the Toffees, and he desperately needs more options to work with.
How have Everton’s summer signings performed this season?
As for the additions that were made in the summer transfer window, the majority have performed relatively well.
Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall have been excellent, while Barry has shown moments of quality up front.
On the other end of the scale, Carlos Alcaraz and Tyler Dibling haven’t featured regularly, while Adam Aznou only made his first Everton appearance on Saturday.
| Player | Signed from |
| Tyler Dibling | Southampton |
| Jack Grealish | Manchester City |
| Merlin Rohl | SC Freiburg |
| Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall | Chelsea |
| Carlos Alcaraz | Flamengo |
| Thierno Barry | Villarreal |
| Adam Aznou | Bayern Munich |
| Mark Travers | Bournemouth |
The recruitment has certainly improved in L4, and TFG should be given credit for that.
However, with the Toffees only six points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, European football next season is a possibility, and Friedkin can’t afford to let that opportunity pass by.
With a midfielder and a right-back at the top of the shopping list, Everton need to act swiftly as three league games await before the deadline on 2 February.
Otherwise, a promising season could go to waste.
