Paul Merson explains why Everton will fall short of 12-year first vs Manchester United

Paul Merson believes Manchester United will have too much for Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday evening.

The Red Devils make the short trip to Merseyside, looking to continue their good form in the Premier League since Michael Carrick’s arrival.

As for the Toffees, they will be desperate to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth last time out, and help boost their European hopes.

David Moyes‘ side currently sit eighth, but with the Premier League so congested this season, one poor result could see them slide into mid-table.

Paul Merson predicts Everton loss vs Man United

After a good start to life at Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton have struggled to capitalise on home advantage in recent weeks.

The Toffees are in superb form on their travels, having picked up three wins and two draws from their last five Premier League matches away from home.

However, at Hill Dickinson Stadium, Moyes’ side are winless in their last six across all competitions, and it is beginning to develop into a real problem.

According to former Arsenal midfielder Merson, Everton’s home struggles will continue on Monday night.

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson predicts that Man United will build on their own good form in the Premier League and secure a 2-1 victory on Merseyside

He said: “The pressure will be on Manchester United because they are playing after Chelsea and Liverpool this weekend. I don’t think Everton are great at home, so at least that’s an advantage for United.

“I like how Manchester United did not give up against West Ham and got that late draw. Michael Carrick took a chance to try and get back in the game. He gambled like Sir Alex Ferguson would have and they got the draw. I liked that about him.

“Manchester United will create chances in this game and I fully expect them to score enough to get the win over Everton.”

Everton seeking 12-year first against Man United

This will be the second time Everton have faced Man United this season, with the reverse fixture coming back at the end of November.

Idrissa Gana Gueye was bizarrely sent off at Old Trafford after getting into a fight with teammate Michael Keane, meaning the Toffees had to play with 10 men for the majority of the contest.

However, Moyes’ side still came away with all three points, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scoring the only goal of the game in the 29th minute.

It means that Everton are now aiming to complete their second-ever Premier League double over Man United.

The only other time they achieved the feat was back in the 2013-14 season, while Moyes was in charge of the Red Devils.

Everton fans will be hoping their side can prove Merson’s prediction wrong and complete what would be a very impressive double over Carrick’s side.
