David Moyes must avoid this Jarrad Branthwaite mistake in Everton vs Newcastle
Jarrad Branthwaite is one of Everton’s better defenders, but against Manchester United, he was deployed at full back.
It was a more conservative approach from David Moyes, and while they nearly got a draw against the Red Devils, it was a decision that blunted Everton’s prowess out on that left-hand side.
The partnership of Branthwaite and Harrison Armstrong ultimately translated to just one shot and two crosses between the pair.
Now, coming up against Newcastle on Saturday, and with a place in Europe still up for grabs, the Toffees manager needs to be less risk-averse, starting with Branthwaite.

Jarrad Branthwaite should not start at left-back – here is who should
Branthwaite may be a reliable defender, but going forward, he lacks the correct qualities needed in the final third, just like Jake O’Brien.
Everton need to start getting points on the board again as they chase a first European season since 2017-2018, and being too safe could cost them.
Starting Branthwaite at left-back against Newcastle would be a mistake, especially seeing how vulnerable they have been in recent weeks.
The Geordies have conceded 12 goals in their last five Premier League matches, showcasing they are there to be got at.
Vitalii Mykolenko could be the better option to start, as while he has had plenty of critics this season, he is more suited to a team looking to push forward more than Branthwaite is.
Additionally, last season, in this very same fixture, the Ukrainian did provide the assist for Charly Alcaraz’s goal as Everton won 1-0.
He has proven he can aid the attack at St James’ Park, and Moyes must avoid the temptation to stick with Branthwaite there.
Branthwaite should still start – here’s where
Starting Branthwaite at centre-back would make sense considering his aerial abilities and the height that Newcastle have in their squad.
The Englishman has won 76 per cent of his aerial duels this season, as per Sofascore, and if Nick Woltemade starts, that could be a much-needed quality.
The German is 6’6″, and that would pose a threat to the Everton backline, even if Eddie Howe plays him in midfield as he has done in recent weeks.
Additionally, Dan Burn’s 6’7″ frame makes him another threat from corners, and having more aerially dominant defenders would be a big boost.
Now isn’t the time to start experimenting with positions at the back.
