Friedkin Group U-turn on the cards after what Dwight McNeil did in Everton’s win over Burnley

Dwight McNeil may well force Everton into a U-turn after his recent performances.

McNeil was heavily linked with an Everton exit in the winter transfer window, but ultimately remained with David Moyes after a late move to Crystal Palace fell through.

The winger was on the periphery, but he has been thrust into the Hill Dickinson Stadium side after injury issues, and impressed when he has been called upon.

The Friedkin Group were widely expected to seek offers for the 26-year-old in the summer, but they could change that decision now.

What is McNeil’s contract situation at Everton?

McNeil’s current deal is the one that he signed in 2022 when he joined the Toffees, and it is set to run until the summer of 2027.

He nearly departed with a £20million deal agreed with Palace, but the London side tried to change the terms of the deal at the death, and that caused the Blues to back out.

The move affected his mental health, with his partner releasing an emotional message after it fell apart, but he appears to have used the disappointment as fuel.

That may have been a blessing in disguise for both the player and the Merseyside club, as he has proved to be a vital figure as Moyes’ side chases their ambitions.

Perhaps, a new contract will be on the cards if he continues to perform the way that he has been.

How did McNeil play in win against Burnley?

If Everton are to qualify for European football, then McNeil’s performances could be crucial in the latter stages of the campaign.

He put in a brilliant showing in the 3-2 win against Newcastle on 28 February, with his defensive work being particularly impressive at St James’ Park.

That was followed by an excellent performance against this former club, the Clarets, in which he proved why he can still play a part for the Blues going forward.

McNeil had two shots, attempted four crosses, and was brilliant at the other end again, with two interceptions and 10 recoveries, per Sofascore.

If he can continue that form until the end of the season, he will surely force the Friedkins to offer him a new contract, rather than allowing him to depart next summer or when his deal expires.
