Seamus Coleman has enjoyed an impressive career at Everton spanning more than 17 years.

The Republic of Ireland international signed for the Toffees in January 2009 and has been a regular fixture of the first-team squad ever since.

In recent seasons, the 37-year-old hasn’t been able to help the Blues as much as he would have liked due to persistent fitness issues.

David Moyes would love to keep Coleman around for the foreseeable future, but the Merseyside outfit shouldn’t make the mistake of extending his playing career in L4.

Moyes has admitted that Coleman is a rare specimen in football these days.

The Scottish manager believes the Irishman is someone any head coach would love to have around the club due to his leadership qualities.

While the veteran right-back’s influence in the dressing room can’t be understated, it’s clearly time for him to hang up his boots.

If the Republic of Ireland qualify for the 2026 World Cup and the defender is fit enough to play for them in the summer tournament, he should play a role in the tournament and then retire.

Instead of keeping Coleman on as a player, Moyes should add the defender to his backroom staff at the Merseyside outfit and potentially get him ready to step into the dugout down the line.

Speaking to Sky Sports on 14 March, the Scot said, “Seamus is a one-off. Seamus would be loved by any manager at any club because of what he brings to the dressing room and what he brings to the players.”

Coleman is one of the four players whose contract at Everton expires at the end of the season.

The Irishman has started just once in the Premier League this season, and it would make sense for the Toffees to find a replacement for him.

As for Michael Keane, Idrissa Gueye and Vitalii Mykolenko, their performances warrant an extension at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with the Blues arguably needing to preserve their squad depth.

Gone are the days when the Merseyside outfit were fighting relegation and The Friedkin Group must now back Moyes in the upcoming transfer windows.
