Jordan Pickford apology to Everton team-mates speaks volumes, but it wasn’t needed

Jordan Pickford apologised to his Everton team-mates for his part in the loss to Arsenal, but the goalkeeper has nothing to be sorry about.

Pickford failed to deal with a cross into the box in the build-up to Viktor Gyokeres’ breakthrough goal late on in Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Emirates Stadium.

The England international was then caught out when going up for a corner in the dying embers, allowing Max Dowman to walk the ball into an unguarded net after getting away from a couple of players.

While Pickford was indeed at fault for the first goal especially in Everton’s loss to Arsenal, the undisputed number one should not feel the need to apologise.

Jake O’Brien shares what Jordan Pickford did after Arsenal loss

Pickford was making his landmark 350th appearance for Everton in all competitions on Saturday, but it was not an evening to remember.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Jake O’Brien revealed that Pickford “come in and apologised” to his Everton colleagues in the Emirates Stadium dressing room.

However, as O’Brien himself went on to say: “But he has kept us in a lot of games. We’ll put it behind us and it’s not something he does very often.

“He’s also made some really good saves, so I’m not sure anyone can say anything because he’s been amazing for us.”

Pickford did indeed make some impressive stops against Arsenal – albeit the best of the lot technically did not matter as the offside flag would have intervened – and he has been at his best this campaign.

In fact, Pickford landed the Premier League Save of the Month for February last week after his stunning stop to deny Sandro Tonali in the win against Newcastle United.

The 32-year-old has kept 10 clean sheets 30 Premier League outings this campaign, in what has been one of his standout seasons over the past decade – and that is saying a lot.

Where does Pickford stand in race to win ‘Golden Glove’?

Pickford’s 10 clean sheets places him joint-third among Premier League goalkeepers this season, level with Crystal Palace’s Jordan Henderson – the man he is keeping out of the England team.

Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Arsenal’s David Raya are second and first respectively with 11 and 15 shutouts to their name.

Raya appears to have the award already wrapped up at this point, but Pickford could easily finish above Donnarumma and Henderson.

Finishing second on that list would be quite the achievement for the Englishman, whose apology to his team-mates spoke volumes but was certainly not needed.
