Everton Women should be mindful of appointing Scott Phelan permanently

Everton Women made it four wins in a row in the Women’s Super League with a 2-1 victory at high-flying Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Toffees went into this clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as underdogs, with Martin Ho’s team fifth in the WSL, whereas Everton were eighth.

However, Scott Phelan’s side edged a deserved victory thanks to goals from Yuka Momiki and Kelly Gago, with Tottenham’s Signe Gaupset scoring in between.

That was interim boss Phelan’s third straight win in the league as they jumped up to sixth, 11 points clear of basement side Leicester City.

Calls are growing for 38-year-old Phelan to get the role full-time, but it may be prudent for Everton not to be hasty over a managerial appointment just yet.

Intriguing new era for Everton Women

In February, Everton sacked manager Brian Sorensen, despite securing their first home win of the season, after nearly four years at the club.

Before then, grumblings amongst the fanbase were growing as Everton were dragged into a relegation battle, despite having a squad capable of a top-six finish.

Sorensen led them to a sixth in 2023, but two subsequent eighth-placed finishes, in addition to their underwhelming first half of 2025-26, prompted Everton to swing the axe.

And while Phelan has won three WSL games in a row, in addition to an FA Cup loss to Liverpool, he is still inexperienced at this level.

But the fact that Phelan, who was Everton’s Under-18s coach before this appointment, is in his first senior management role is worth noting.

It may be better to wait until the summer to see how Everton fare. Plus, that will give them extra time to look for possible permanent successors to Sorensen, who was named Aston Villa Women’s technical director last week.

Phelan may well get the job, but there is no harm in waiting a couple of months until the end of the season. After all, the new manager bounce can end quite quickly.

Everton face tricky period in WSL

After this win, a result that took them a point above London City Lionesses to climb into the top half, Phelan couldn’t help but express his delight at his side’s strong show of character.

He told Everton TV after Everton’s return to WSL action: “I’m over the moon. I’m proud of the effort that the girls have had to put in.

“We knew if we were going to get anything positive from today (Sunday), it would have to be a big collective effort. We stressed that from day one, anything that we do comes from doing things together.”

They will need that togetherness ahead of a difficult stretch of games in the coming weeks.

Indeed, next up, they travel to Champions League-chasing Manchester United, followed by another derby clash with Liverpool.

In April, Everton host defending champions Chelsea, before travelling to reigning Champions League holders Arsenal.

They then round off the season at home to lowly Leicester. Getting more than two wins in that run will be an excellent return. That may be enough for Phelan to get the job full-time.
