Dwight McNeil: Right-wing position has breathed new life into Everton star
Dwight McNeil has mostly been known for being a left-sided attacker, but in recent weeks, David Moyes has used him on the right for Everton.
The Englishman’s future at Hill Dickinson seemed set in stone. Life away from Merseyside was up next for McNeil, but his transfer to Crystal Palace in the winter window broke down.
For many players, you could expect their performances to be affected as a result. However, the winger has not reduced his levels.
In fact, if anything, McNeil has revitalised his form for the Blues over the last few weeks.
Much of that has come down to Moyes using the left-footed attacker on the right wing in Everton’s recent games, breathing new life into his career.

How Dwight McNeil has embraced right-wing role at Everton
Over his 271 games in senior football, McNeil has only ever played 39 times as a right-winger.
It is quite an unfamiliar role for the Englishman but one he has fully embraced with his performances for Everton.
| Dwight McNeil positional history | Games played |
| Left-wing | 120 |
| Left midfield | 60 |
| Right-wing | 39 |
| Attacking midfield | 15 |
| Right midfield | 14 |
| Left-back | 3 |
| Centre-forward, Second striker, Centre midfield | 1 |
The 26-year-old has started four straight matches for Everton in the Premier League, all of them on the right.
While he has not scored or assisted in those matches, his performances have been deserving of praise. In that run, McNeil has helped Everton secure nine points out of a possible 12.
He has also maintained a 60 per cent dribble success over that quartet of appearances, showcasing the increase in his confidence in the winger.

His work rate and ethic to force his way back into Moyes’ plans after his failed move to Crystal Palace can only be commended.
Dwight McNeil could change Everton’s transfer plans
McNeil’s resurgence could stop Everton from signing Tyrique George, with the Chelsea loanee having little impact so far.
Perhaps if McNeil had left the Blues, we could have already seen much more from the 20-year-old.
However, if the Everton winger can continue his exploits, then financially it could be more feasible to keep him at Hill Dickinson rather than outright purchasing George.
It is strange how things work out in football, but McNeil will be grateful he was given another chance in Merseyside to show his qualities.
He could now feature for the Toffees in Europe next season after he had begun preparing for life after Everton.
