Everton’s Idrissa Gueye shows his class with top performance in Senegal win vs Peru

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye was in top form for Senegal on Saturday, as his side beat Peru 2-0 in an international friendly.

Idrissa Gueye: the Everton midfielder who simply refuses to show any signs of ageing.

The 36-year-old evergreen central midfielder has once again been a rock in the Toffees’ engine room this season, starting all 22 of his Premier League appearances in 2025-26.

Indeed, his 2022 capture from Paris Saint-Germain is one of the shrewdest pieces of transfer business Everton have done in some time, and David Moyes’ midfield will suffer greatly for his eventual exit, whenever that may be.

Toffees fans will hope that’s not anytime soon yet, as the Senegalese man prepares to lead Everton to a successful European football push in the final weeks of the campaign.

How did Everton’s Idrissa Gueye perform for Senegal vs Peru?

Gueye has been Everton’s unsung hero this season, holding together the midfield like glue whenever he’s on the pitch.

Alongside James Garner, the two have formed one of the Premier League’s most formidable central midfield pairings.

As such, Toffees supporters will have crossed their fingers nothing untoward would happen to Gueye whilst on international duty, as he and his Senegal team played Peru on Saturday.

Thankfully, not only did he play the full 90 minutes and come out unscathed, Gueye put in the kind of performance that once again showed just how superb of a footballer he is.

As per Sofascore, Gueye played one key pass, completed 95 per cent of his passes accurately, as well as completing all 43 of his pass attempts inside his own half successfully too.

He took a whopping 105 touches against Peru, giving the ball away just six times and making seven recoveries, whilst also winning four of his five ground duels and completing two of his three dribble attempts respectively.

Gueye absolutely ran the show in midfield for Senegal, and ensured that Peru could do very little to prevent the Lions of Teranga from running out comfortable 2-0 winners in the friendly.

Everton would be mad not to sign Gueye to new contract

Out of contract at Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer, Gueye, as things stand, is heading for the free agent market.

However, Everton would be bonkers to allow that to happen, as despite his age, he’s not showing any telltale signs of slowing down.

In fact, he might just be ageing like a fine wine, and unthinkably, even still getting better as his Senegal showing against Peru strongly suggests.

So, with concerns over the potential to lose either/or James Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall this summer, Everton’s midfield could see a couple of huge transfer losses over the coming months.

Therefore, penning Gueye to another one-year deal would provide the Toffees with some peace of mind and security there, whilst also giving him his just rewards for yet another brilliant and influential season on Merseyside.
